JUNE 2006
I had the pleasure of working with over 40 wonderful voice teachers, performers, and professors from all around the country when I was the clinician at Belmont University’s Summer Vocal Pedagogy Workshop, in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Jennifer Coleman and the entire Belmont faculty made me feel right at home, and the three days seemed to fly by. The workshop included eleven lectures and five master classes on topics such as Stage Presence, Selecting the Right Audition Song, and Interpreting Lyrics.

Robert Marks came to Belmont University as our clinician for the Summer Vocal Pedagogy and Performance Workshop. For three days Mr. Marks spoke to a group of teachers and performers about Musical Theatre. I walked away with much understanding of that genre and the requirements at the professional level, which will help me to bring my students to greater levels of artistry and I will be able to help them become competitive in the market. Mr. Marks was friendly and engaging and showed his mastery of the style, role requirements, auditions repertoire, and more. We could not have had a better clinician to show us what it takes to compete on Broadway!

We had forty participants total, which included teachers and performers. The participants in the class were excited to work with Mr. Marks and their reviews of the workshop were outstanding. Most of the performers stated that they learned a lot and many questions were answered. The teachers said that they now understand how to help their singers who wish to sing Musical Theatre. They also valued the sessions on belting and 16 bar cuts. Watching Mr. Marks take a section out of an entire song to make a 16 bar cut that highlighted the performer's singing was extremely helpful for the teachers as well!

We have three SPOTLIGHT NIGHT showcases coming up in June at Danny’s (346 West 46th Street, New York City). There are generally five singers in every show, performing three songs each. On Friday, June 9th we have a 7:00 show (adults), and on June 23rd there is a 6:00 (kids) and 9:00 (adults) performance. The performers are singers who work with me on their material, and it’s always great fun. Reservations can be made at 212-265-8133, and more information is at www.bobmarks.com/spotlightnight.asp

St. Mary’s Choir from Canada came to New York City for a special performance at Riverside Church. The day before the show, we met at Nola Studios for a little last-minute coaching.

On June 28th, I’ll be off to beautiful Charleston, SC to be a judge for the American Talent Showcase. I’ll be giving private coaching, as well as teaching some classes on musical performance. This is my fourth year with this organization, and I always look forward to my annual trips to Charleston.

This July, Jeannette LoVetri will once again lead the Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. I’ll be the guest speaker, discussing repertoire requirements for Broadway performers. More information at www.su.edu/tvpc

On July 14th, I’ll be a judge and give a Musical Performance Seminar at the Talent America National Finals at the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel. I don’t know how exactly how long I’ve been involved with Talent America, but I’ll bet it’s been at least 15 years!

Although it sounds like I’ll be away a lot, I’m never gone for more than a couple of days at a time. I’m always available by phone or email to make appointments or offer advice. I hope your summer is productive, relaxing, successful, healthy and happy.
